Walton hits Dizzy's
The ubiquitous pianist Cedar Walton will lead a his quartet in a series of performances Aug. Monday (Aug. 16) through Sunday (Aug.21) at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola -- in The House of Swing, Jazz at Lincoln Center's Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City.
Not a name that jumps out at the casual jazz fan, Walton has contributed to the texture and been an integral part of the music identity as a player with many icons His sensibilities were forged in his youth jammin' with the likes of Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and John Coltrane during after hours gigs in his native Dallas.

After moving to New York City, he began to establish himself working locally with Sonny Rollins, Lou Donaldson and, later with his first touring job, J.J. Johnson. His recording debut was with Kenny Dorham on the Riverside album, Kenny Dorham Sings.
Perhaps, enduring early musical association has been with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, a tenure during which he composed such tracks as "Mosaic" and "The Promised Land."
His debut recording as a leader came in 1966 with the release of Cedar on Prestige Records. From the late 1960s to early '70s, Walton kept steady company with bassist Sam Jones and drummers Louis Hayes and Billy Higgins in multi-purpose trios that occasionally featured saxophonists Clifford Jordan, George Coleman or Bob Berg.
He also has performed with artists such as Ron Carter and Billy Higgins, Harold Land, Bobby Hutcherson, Milt Jackson, Dexter Gordon and vocalist Ernestine Anderson.
His current quartet features Vincent Herring (alto saxophone), David Williams (bass), Craig Wuepper (drums).

Jazz Gallery celebrates

NEW YORK, NY -- The Jazz Gallery will commemorate its first decade with a special 10th anniversary season running from September through December. The celebration includes a series of concerts showcasing musicians and reprising themes that, over the past 10 years, have earned the space a widespread reputation as a distinctive arts organizations.
The Gallery will kick off its 10th season Tuesday, Sept. 6, with the "Los Musicos en Cuba: Images From A Musical Island" photography exhibition, featuring black-and-white images by Cuban photographers Ernesto Dos Santos and Leslie Sinclair and color images by American photographer David Garten, portraying a wide range of musicians, both native and foreign, performing in Cuba.
Wednesday, Sept. 7, trumpeter Roy Hargrove, who has been closely associated with the Gallery through its history and joined its Board of Trustees this year, will kick off the musical component ofthe venue's 10th anniversary season with "The Trumpet Shall Sound."

Hargrove will be joined each evening through Sept 11 by another acclaimed jazz trumpeter in this latest edition of a series that haseen a popular program since its debut in December 2001. Darren Barrett (9/7), Claudio Roditi (9/8), Tom Harrell (9/9),Nicholas Payton (9/10) and Marcus Belgrave (9/11) arescheduled to appear with Hargrove accompanied by the rhythm section of pianist Danny Grissett, bassist Reuben Rogers anddrummer Greg Hutchinson.
